Epistemic Contradictions Do Not Threaten Classical Logic

چکیده

Abstract Epistemic contradictions are now a well-known and often discussed phenomenon among those who study epistemic modals. These expressed by sentences like ‘It is raining it might not be raining’ whose oddness to the common ear demands an explanation. However, has turned out rather controversial enterprise provide such explanation in sufficiently precise general manner. According pragmatic explanations, semantically consistent but pragmatically defective. semantic one should regard as plain inconsistencies. Endorsing solution is, however, tantamount rejecting classical logic, which predicts consistency of contradictions. After arguing that all existing solutions this problem face yet unmet challenges, I will present new adequately overcomes these challenges. propose view epistemically defective sentences. The main thesis emerging we need neither abandon inference rules logic nor truth-conditional approach semantics deal with

Epistemic semantics for classical and intuitionistic logic

1 In this paper I propose to explain how several nonstandard semantic systems for the propositional logic can be seen as employing essentially the same principles for defining the notion of logical entailment and the more basic idea of assignment of truth-values to molecular sentences. The systems are Kleene's three-valued matrix for the strong connectives, Lukasiewicz's three-valued matrix, su...

Hyperloops Do Not Threaten the Notion of an Effective Procedure

This paper develops my (forthcoming) criticisms of the philosophical significance of a certain sort of infinitary computational process, a hyperloop. I start by considering whether hyperloops suggest that “effectively computable” is vague (in some sense). I then consider and criticise two arguments by Hogarth, who maintains that hyperloops undermine the very idea of effective computability. I c...

Epistemic extensions of combined classical and intuitionistic propositional logic

Logic L was introduced by Lewitzka [8] as a modal system that combines intuitionistic and classical logic: L is a conservative extension of CPC and it contains a copy of IPC via embedding φ 7→ φ. In this article, we consider L3, i.e. L augmented with S3 modal axioms, define basic epistemic extensions and prove completeness w.r.t. algebraic semantics. Our systems involve, in adapted form, some o...
